The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen, in cooperation with the United Nations and the Yemeni government in Aden, launched the first phase of the “adequate housing” project to rehabilitate 600 war-damaged homes for low-income families in the city of Aden in the south of the country, at a cost of $2.5 million.

The first batch of 80 houses in Al Mualla district will be implemented out of 300 damaged houses in Al Mualla, and the rest of the housing units will be rehabilitated in the same area and 300 houses in Khor Maksar district.

The war caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, residential and government buildings in Aden. In Aden, the Saudi program signed the agreement for the implementation of the first group of the adequate housing project and the rehabilitation of 600 homes for families with low incomes through the United Nations Human Settlements Program and in cooperation with the Ministry of Works and Al-Waleed Philanthropies.

The Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program, Muhammad Aidarous Zain, said that the total number of damaged houses in Aden amounts to more than 12,000 apartments and houses, while the number of houses that the project will rehabilitate and restore is 1,100 houses through several stages.

The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation in the Yemeni government, Waed Bathib, estimated in mid-February the losses of the economy in his country due to the war at about 126 billion dollars, while the losses from the destruction of infrastructure reached tens of billions of additional dollars, according to the results of a study prepared by the Development Program to the United Nations.
