The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has initiated a project, funded by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), to revitalize irrigation infrastructure in the governorates of Abyan, Hadhramout, and Dhamar.
The project, a component of the Resilience Program in the irrigation and agriculture sectors, aims to bolster local water management and food security by enhancing agricultural production, water management, and mitigating water-related conflicts and disaster risks.
The undertaking involves rehabilitating approximately 3,200 meters of water channels, protecting about 1,400 meters of valley banks, and establishing a modern irrigation system, including a drip irrigation network, conveyance system, greenhouses, flexible spray system, and water farming units that will cover 342 hectares of irrigated land. These improvements will benefit 1,116 families in the targeted governorates.
Additionally, the FAO noted that the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has concluded training for water user associations to resolve water conflicts and has taken steps to reduce disaster risks and provide early flood warnings at the community level. Hussein Gadain, the FAO’s representative in Yemen, underscored the project’s significance in enhancing agricultural production, livelihood opportunities, and reducing water-related conflicts to ensure improved production, nutrition, environment, and quality of life for Yemenis.
