In a report last July, Oxfam called on the international community to facilitate the import of food supplies to Yemen.

In its report published by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the organization indicated that Yemen is facing unprecedented increases in food prices, placing millions of people at risk of catastrophic hunger.

The organization called on the international community to overcome obstacles, finance grain imports, and alleviate the debt burden of Yemen, which has been hit hard by the worsening global food crises. The prices of wheat, flour, cooking oil, eggs and sugar have all increased by more than a third since March.

“Yemen imports 90% of its food, including 42% of its wheat from Ukraine. Importers have warned that stocks may run out in the coming months and that a global increase in costs will challenge their ability to secure wheat imports into Yemen,” the organization said.

The report indicated that between March and June of this year, the price of basic food increased by 45%, flour increased by 38%, cooking oil by 45%, sugar by 36%, rice by 30%, and canned beans by 38 %, powdered milk by 36%, and eggs by 35%.
