The humanitarian situation in Yemen is deteriorating, and humanitarian efforts are absent or barely amount to the level of human suffering. According to the statement of the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, that millions of Yemenis are in need of humanitarian response and emergency interventions. Maurer added, in a press conference held in Sana’a, on Monday, July 5, that there is a rift between the needs of the Yemeni people and the humanitarian response, and this rift is expanding every day, “calling for action to address the challenges facing humanitarian work in Yemen. The Kuwait Relief Society in Yemen launched a project to distribute 1930 food baskets in three governorates in southern Yemen, with funding from the Kuwaiti Zakat House. The deputy head of the Kuwait Relief Society office in Yemen, Adel Baeshen, said in a press statement during the inauguration event, that this project includes the distribution of baskets. A variety of food in the governorates of Aden, Lahj and Abyan. He added that the project began with the distribution of 600 baskets in Lahj, noting that the importance of the project lies in being in line with people’s living needs in light of the difficult conditions the country is going through. He explained that this project targets poor families and the poorest in the three governorates to contribute to meeting their living needs and alleviating their suffering. Today, Sunday, the Kuwait Relief Society distributed food baskets in the Abyan governorate, as part of a similar distribution to a number of Yemeni governorates. The Kuwait Relief Society inaugurated the distribution of 300 food baskets in the district of Zanzibar – the capital of Abyan Governorate – out of 600 baskets allocated to the governorate, with a total of 1930 baskets allocated to three governorates, including Abyan. The Kuwaiti Society implemented the food basket distribution project, in the presence of the director of Zanzibar Directorate Salem Akef, who said that this project would help the poor, especially in light of the high cost of living and the deteriorating situation of people, praising Kuwait’s role in the humanitarian field. The project for distributing food baskets in Abyan governorate is the second after a similar project by the same Kuwaiti society last Thursday in Lahj governorate. The food basket consists of flour, rice, sugar, milk, beans, oil, tea and others, while the food project targets Lahj, Abyan and Aden.
