Funded by the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union (EU) and the National Cancer Control Foundation, Abd Rabbo Moftah, the deputy governor of Ma’rib governorate, and Dr. Wajdi Al-Mikhlafi, the deputy of Ma’rib Hospital Authority, opened the Psychiatric Care Unit and the Treatment of the Oncological Tumors Unit as the first two specialized treatment units in the governorate.
The unit started treating 4,000 cases of mental illness. Dr. Mahyoub Al-Mikhlafi, a psychologist, explained that the ongoing conflict, declining living conditions, and the deterioration of the economic structure have all greatly affected the citizens. Many of them were exposed to a number of psychological pressures that require special care and attention.
The oncology unit has ten inpatient beds. The deputy governor listened to the specialists and learned about the most important treatment programs offered to patients. He also listened to the challenges facing patients in providing treatments, special examinations, and chemical doses.
He appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Health, the National Cancer Control Foundation and the World Health Organization in alleviating the suffering of the injured. He stressed the importance of overcoming the difficulties facing the health sector in the governorate. He emphasized that the psychiatric care unit is the first step which helps in treating patients from the different neighboring directorates and governorates.
