Amid ongoing conflicts, Yemen faces a severe threat from landmines and explosive remnants of war, ranking it among the top three globally affected countries. In a significant move towards recovery and safety, UNOPS, in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and funded by the European Union, has launched an initiative to enhance mine action operations across Yemen.

This strategic effort not only aims to clear the deadly hazards but also to educate the public on mine risks, provide victim assistance, and develop a comprehensive roadmap for mine action. “Our goal is to eliminate these hidden killers, offering hope and safety back to the Yemeni people,” stated Julien Harneis, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen.

The project focuses on strengthening coordination among national authorities, NGOs, and UN partners, ensuring efficient, compliant, and accountable demining operations. Muriel Cornelis from the EU Humanitarian Aid in Sana’a emphasized, “This initiative will significantly alleviate the suffering caused by landmines, making life safer for women, children, and men alike.”

With extensive stakeholder engagement, including training and capacity building, UNOPS aims to foster an environment conducive to scaling up operations. This includes not only physical clearance but also enhancing national capabilities to manage and regulate mine action independently in the future.

The European Union’s support underscores a commitment to humanitarian aid, focusing on saving lives and reducing the impact of these devastating devices. Through this collaborative approach, Yemen moves a step closer to a future where the threat of landmines diminishes, paving the way for peace and development.
