The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation have completed the rehabilitation of two transit sheds at the Port of Aden, Yemen’s largest port. The project provides ample space for storing thousands of tons of goods, reduces ship waiting times, and increases handling capacity.

The UNDP stated that due to the protracted crisis in Yemen, the economic conditions have hindered the maintenance of vital transit sheds at the Port of Aden. The lack of safe storage for imported goods forced port operators to transfer goods to distant warehouses located half a kilometer from the loading docks.

This distance not only increased the risk of damage to goods due to weather conditions but also contributed to the inefficiency of port operations. Therefore, the rehabilitation of the transit sheds began in August of last year and was completed last July. Each shed is 170 meters long and 60 meters wide, providing ample space for storing thousands of tons of goods, reducing ship waiting times, and increasing handling capacity, according to the UNDP.

While the project will further enhance the port’s efficiency by digitizing the Aden Container Terminal through the installation of a wireless communication system, UNDP Resident Representative in Yemen, Zeina Ali Ahmed, stressed that the rehabilitation of these two vital sheds is a crucial step towards enhancing the operational capacity and efficiency of the Port of Aden.

The UN official stated that by ensuring the safe storage of goods, the project not only protects vital imports but also supports the immediate and long-term economic recovery of Yemen.
