UN special envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg said that lack of progress in the Yemeni negotiations prompts the need to launch serious dialogues at the local and national levels, and involvement of tribal leaders.

In the opening of the Yemeni Tribal Conference in Amman, Jordan– which lasted for two days – Grundberg expressed hope that Yemeni tribes would contribute to ending the ongoing war in the country for almost seven years.

By the end of the conference, more than 40 Yemeni tribal leaders called on parties to the conflict for a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire, and to open all roads and humanitarian corridors.

Tribal leaders, along with UN special envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, Chargé d’Affairs of the European Union Mission to Yemen Marion Lalisse, French ambassador to Yemen Jean-Marie Safa have participated in the confrence.

The participation of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, in the Yemeni Tribal Conference in Amman, Jordan, followed his visit to Egypt, as part of his efforts to reach a unified view of peacemaking in Yemen.

During his visit to Cairo last November, the Special Envoy met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit to discuss the importance of a stable Yemen.

According to a statement by the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Grundberg, called on the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, to support the Yemenis in order to reach a comprehensive political solution through negotiation.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League stressed that the security and stability of Yemen is an integral part of regional security and stability.

According to the statement, the Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed his hope that the efforts of the UN envoy would contribute to advancing a political solution in Yemen, as it is the best way for a comprehensive sustainable settlement.

Mr. Grundberg also met with a diverse group of Yemeni women and men including parliamentarians, representatives of political parties, civil society organizations and media professionals.

Mr. Grundberg consulted Yemeni interlocutors on ways to start an inclusive political dialogue that includes the parties’ demands in a broader Yemeni agenda of political, economic and security priorities.
