  • The European Union and UNICEF Contribute to Providing Support for Education in Yemen

Khabar Khair (Only Good News)

In May 2022, the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Service (ECHO) contributed with €13.4 million for the provision of high-quality education for children in emergencies in Yemen. This support was for providing integrated education and protection services to 57,000 conflict-affected or out-of-school children.

The goal of the project is to enable children to continue their education and develop basic knowledge and skills needed for their future. It also aims to provide them with high-quality education, including for displaced and disabled children in order to give them a sense of normalcy even in the most challenging situations. The project targeted 20,000 children in Ma’rib governorate, in which UNICEF established 50 temporary learning spaces in three different locations for the displaced, enabling about four thousand children to access non-formal education and child protection services. It has also trained more than 200 education staff on safe school protocols (including COVID-19 prevention and child safety). Additionally, it has provided more than 600 teachers with community awareness messages about the importance of education, educational opportunities, and safe protocols. About 300 children also participated in psychosocial support activities.
