American billionaire and head of Starlink satellite internet company, Elon Musk, announced on Wednesday the availability of satellite internet services in Yemen. The announcement came in a brief post by Musk on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote: “Starlink available in Yemen!” This announcement was confirmed by the company in a separate post on the same platform earlier today.
Yemen faces significant challenges in providing stable and widespread internet coverage, with many areas, especially remote ones, suffering from service interruptions and poor coverage. This announcement comes as good news to many in the country, as Starlink technology represents an opportunity to improve internet connectivity, especially in places where it is difficult to extend traditional infrastructure.
About a month and a half ago, the internationally recognized Yemeni government announced the signing of an agreement with Starlink to launch satellite internet services. The government confirmed at the time that all necessary procedures for starting the service had been completed, stressing the company’s intention to provide satellite internet services at competitive prices to be accessible to all segments of society.
Starlink’s entry into the Yemeni market is an important step towards enhancing digital connectivity in the war-torn country. This may open the door to new opportunities for economic and educational development, and enhance opportunities for Yemeni citizens to connect with the outside world.
