With funding from the European Union, UNESCO is working on the rehabilitation of more than 100 historical buildings in the Yemeni city of Shibam. This initiative aims to preserve the unique architectural heritage of the city, known as the “Manhattan of the Desert” for its towering mud-brick towers, and to pass it on to future generations.
The city of Shibam, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an exceptional example of urban planning and medieval architectural heritage. However, these historic buildings face numerous challenges due to erosion factors and harsh environmental conditions, threatening their long-term survival.
These rehabilitation efforts come as part of UNESCO’s commitment to protecting Yemeni cultural heritage, especially in light of the difficult circumstances the country is experiencing.
