Funded by “Zakat Fund” of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Qatar Red Crescent implemented a project to provide food baskets for needy families in eight Yemeni governorates, at a cost of $609,377 (which equals 2,511,000 Qatari riyals).
The project targeted 52,920 beneficiaries in the following governorates: Capital Municipality (Sana’a), Aden, Al-Dhale’a, Lahj, Taiz, Al-Hodeidah, Ma’rib, and Hajjah. It concentrated on the displaced who have lost their source of livelihood, families headed by women, widows, orphans, families with no income and disabled family members. In addition, nearly 4,000 food baskets were distributed in some of these governorates.
Omar Al-Sameti, adviser to the governor of Lahj for organizations’ affairs, praised the humanitarian role played by Qatar Red Crescent in Yemen. He stressed that the displaced and host communities are in dire need of such humanitarian interventions in food, health, education, water and means of livelihood, especially with the onset of winter when needs arise.
