  • Organizations Helping Millions of Women and Children in Yemen

Khabar Khair (Only Good News) – Abdul Jalil Al-Salami

Many organizations and strategies are working to ensure health and protection for millions of women and children in Yemen. Such support can protect the world’s most vulnerable groups in times of crisis and conflict.

WHO and UNICEF reports indicate that Yemen has one of the highest estimated rates for Maternal Mortality in the world with 17% of women of reproductive age mortality from childbirth complications.

International organizations are working to save the lives of these pregnant women and children who desperately need medical care.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is taking an initiative to help millions across Yemen, including pregnant women by sending health workers and midwives to the country’s rural areas to do medica check- ups and treat pregnant women for complications.

UNICEF is actively working to take a series of actions to mitigate risks facing children and has responded to the crisis in Yemen by providing physical, mental, and medical health care services to children and families.

Around 1,193,585 children under the age of five have been examined for detecting malnutrition in health facilities, and 518,430 mothers have received counseling on infant and young child feeding, since the beginning of 2021.

One million and 98 thousand children under the age of five were vaccinated with the polio vaccine, and 828,470 children under the age of five were injected with vitamin A, through the polio campaign during the first half of 2021.

Organizations such as USAID (the United States Agency for International Development) and UNICEF are working so hard to ensure that all pregnant women and children in Yemen have access to the medical care they desperately need.

USAID has trained more than 260 midwives and planning to send them to Yemeni communities to help pregnant women and infants.

USAID is working with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Yemeni Ministry of Public Health and Population, and other organizations to ensure maternal health in Yemen.

Save the Children is the largest relief organization in Yemen, with teams helping children receive basic care.

The organization, which started responding to the crisis in Yemen in 2015, has provided life-saving care to more than 3 million children, and took care of malnourished children under the age of 5.

Save the Children has temporary education programs to address the lack of education during the conflict, moreover the organization has supported nearly 100,000 parents to secure basic needs of their children.
