Funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), Hassan Dam Project was implemented in Khanfar District in Abyan Governorate. The project is one of a number of important and strategic projects, which aim to secure sustainable sources of water, revitalize the agricultural sector, and achieve both food and water security.

The first phase of the project is being implemented at a cost of about $78,000,000. The completion of the project will contribute to storing 19,500,000 cubic meters of water and distributing it to irrigation canals that will feed about 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in Abyan Delta.

The project will be implemented in a total area of 3 kilometers for 5 dams, with a depth and height of 20.5 meters in order to accommodate the large amount of rainwater. In addition, an earthen barrier of 2.5 kilometers will be constructed over a period of about 3 years in the first phase.

ADFD officially approved the project in 2008, but the implementation procedures were halted for different reasons.

The governor of Abyan praised the role played by the UAE in the humanitarian aspect in Yemen, represented by ADFD, which aims to advance development in all sectors in Yemen. He listened to a detailed explanation of the nature of the preparations that precede the start of the implementation of the project, which include transporting heavy equipment and determining its initial construction works. The preparation period will last about 3 months and will be followed by other steps, according to the engineers on site.
