Aden, Yemen – Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak inaugurated a 120 MW solar power plant in the Al-Buraiqeh district of Aden Governorate on Monday.

Funded by the United Arab Emirates through Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar,” the project aims to contribute to solving the electricity crisis in Yemen and promoting the use of renewable energy.

The plant is one of the most important renewable energy projects in Yemen. With a design capacity of 120 MW, it is expandable to 600 MW in the future. The project created job opportunities for more than 2,000 people during the construction phase, which involved installing over 211,000 solar panels and over 900 kilometers of electrical cables across 1.6 million square meters.

This plant is a significant step and one of the most important strategic projects towards achieving Yemen’s goals in the field of renewable energy. It provides sustainable solutions to the country’s electricity crisis and represents a significant commitment by the government to protect the environment and uphold the outcomes of climate summits, including the recent COP28 in Dubai.

Prime Minister bin Mubarak stated: “This project is a model for future partnerships with the private sector, within the government’s vision of transforming electricity from a burden to a service provided to citizens and an investment opportunity.”

He stressed the government’s determination to find a clear strategy to solve the electricity problem, moving away from temporary solutions to permanent ones that address the root causes of the issue. He emphasized that the electricity sector is committed to transparency and accountability in all operations related to production, generation, distribution, and collection.
